Abstract
As the aging society affects employment structure in the Korean labor market, the number of older workers are steadily increasing. However, in response to the constant rise in older workers social policies have been focusing on employment counseling and support. Relatively, little is known about verbal violence against older workers in workplace. This study aims to examine age discrimination experienced by older workers in their work. This study conducted qualitative interviews with 12 older workers to understand the meaning of work and occupation, social stereotypes of older people and their experiences of age discrimination and human rights infringement and perception of elderly human rights. The results of the study showed that participants had strong confidence and pride in their work and capabilities, however experienced various types of age discrimination. However, they could not actively respond to the discrimination except to endure it. Most of participants did not perceive the meaning of older workers` human rights and considered human rights as claiming only personal rights. Therefore, the results implied that older workers are not familiar with the meaning of human rights. This study suggests that employment policies for elderly employment should be approached in the perspective of civil rights rather than dispensation and protect dignity of older workers.
